Dental Implants Q & A

What is a dental implant?

Dental implants are a long-term solution for restoring your smile if you’re missing teeth. They provide the foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and work just like your natural teeth.

Dental implants are artificial roots and teeth that replace each missing tooth individually, so they’re a perfect solution to restoring one — or all — of your teeth.

The implants are made of high-quality materials and work similarly to your body’s natural system. The root of an implant is a titanium anchor that bonds permanently to your jawbone, and the crown of the implant is your new tooth that feels and functions just like a natural tooth.

Dental implants are an ideal way to replace missing teeth without worry that they might shift when you talk or eat, as dentures often do.

How do I know if I need a dental implant?

Whenever you lose a permanent tooth to injury or decay, it’s a good idea to replace it with an implant. The dental implant helps you avoid more complex dental procedures and keeps your mouth and jaw as healthy as possible. Dental implants may be for you if you want to:

  • Replace missing teeth
  • Stop wearing uncomfortable dentures
  • Avoid removal of a good tooth to make a dental bridge
  • Prevent surrounding teeth from shifting out of place
  • Restore your ability to chew and talk as usual
  • Restore or enhance facial features
  • Relieve pain and bite problems

Dr. Bloom performs a review of your general health history, a dental exam, and a 3D cone beam imaging exam to determine your needs and considerations for an implant.

How do dental implants work?

Dental implantation usually involves two surgical procedures that occur over the course of 3-6 months. However, by using advanced 3D cone beam imaging and guided surgery, Dr. Bloom’s precision and skill minimizes both surgical appointments necessary and recovery times. In fact, a single tooth implant can have zero recovery time.

First, Dr. Bloom implants titanium anchors into your jawbone, where they gradually bond with your jawbone in a process called osseointegration. During this time, if desired and if necessary, a temporary crown, bridge, or denture can be worn to replace the missing teeth until the implants are ready to restore with permanent restoration.

Next, if necessary, Dr. Bloom surgically uncovers the implants and attaches a small healing collar. Then, he and his team take impressions so your new teeth can be made. Once the new teeth are finished, Dr. Bloom connects a small post to the anchored implant and places your replacement teeth atop the post.

The size, shape, color, and fit of your replacement teeth are designed to blend with your other teeth, so once the procedure is complete, your smile looks completely natural.

Do dental implants hurt?

Dr. Bloom shows every consideration to ensure the implantation process is as comfortable and easy as possible. Most implant surgeries have less post-operative complications and pain than the surgery to extract the tooth.

Most of the time, after the surgical appointment and throughout the process, your daily life usually isn’t disrupted. You’re able to eat, speak, laugh, and share your restored smile with family and friends.
